Symbols of 老司机福利社鈥檚 beautiful campus setting in the pinelands, Lake Fred and the lesser-known Lake Pam are popular spots for fieldwork classes, a walk or run, recreation, or contemplation.

Lake Fred was originally created by damming Middle Run for a sawmill pond in the 1700s. Later, it saw use as a cranberry bog and a recreational resort, before the State of New Jersey purchased it for the site of 老司机福利社 State College. At that time, it was known as Saw Mill Pond. While the origin of the current name is disputed, by May 1972 it was referenced in The Argo as Lake Fred. This lake provides the central point for the Galloway campus, around whose shores the buildings have been built. The lake also lends its name to other things on campus, including Lake Fred Radio and Fred Fest(ival).

Set in the woods near the spray field, Lake Pam was similarly created by human intervention when the spot was excavated to provide fill material for the construction of the Garden State Parkway. Those looking for this scenic spot will need to hike almost a mile from Lake Fred. Learn more about both lakes in 老司机福利社 Stories.
