Not registered to vote? There are two ways you can register to vote in New Jersey:
New Jersey's online voter registration process is convenient and easy to use--it takes less than five minutes to complete your online voter registration!
Visit the and click 鈥淕et Started!鈥 to begin the online voter registration application. In the online voter registration application, you'll be asked to:
-
Certify your eligibility to vote
The first page of the application asks you to certify and attest that you are (1) a U.S. citizen, (2) a New Jersey resident who will have resided in the state and county where you are registering for at least the 30 days before the next election, (3) at least 17 years old, and (4) not currently serving a sentence of incarceration for a conviction.
-
Provide basic personal information
On the second page of the application, you will need to provide your name; date of birth; NJ Driver鈥檚 License Number or Non-Driver State Identification Number OR Social Security number; and your residence address. All this information must be provided in order to process your voter registration.
- If you select to use your Driver鈥檚 License number or ID Card number, your voter registration information is verified with your information on file with the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission. Your digitized signature on file with the Motor Vehicle Commission will be pulled and assigned to your voter registration.
- If you select to use your Social Security number, you will be asked to enter the last 4 digits of your Social Security number and use your cursor to provide your digital signature. The signature that you provide here will be your official signature on file with your registration, so sign as clearly and legibly as possible.
-
Identify your political party affiliation
The third page of the application asks you if you wish to declare a political party affiliation. If you consider yourself part of a political party, you can select the party you identify with from the list provided. You may choose not to affiliate with a party by selecting 鈥淯naffiliated (No, I do not wish to be affiliated with a political party)鈥.
- Why does the voter registration application ask for your political party? New Jersey is a closed primary state, meaning only declared members of political parties can vote in primary elections for local, state and national office. If you declare a party affiliation here, that means you are eligible to participate in that party鈥檚 primary elections. If you choose to remain unaffiliated, you will be able to participate in all general elections, but you will not be able to vote in primary elections.
-
Submit
The final page of the application asks you to review your application content. This page also includes a statement that lays out the penalties in place for submitting a false or fraudulent voter registration and asks you to agree that you understand these penalties.
We recommend registering to vote online 鈥 it's convenient and it goes through immediately to your county clerk's office. But you can still register with a hard copy application form, available from the .
- To register using this form, you need to print and complete the form for the county where you would like to register.
- The completed form should be mailed back to the County Clerk鈥檚 office 鈥 the address is listed on the second page of the registration form. No postage is needed. You can just fold up the sheet of paper, tape it closed, and drop it in the mail.
